Many residents of the United Kingdom fear going to see a Chiropractor because they fear the visit will be long and painful. The good news is this: visits to the Chiropractor rarely result in more pain for a patient. A visit might, however, take some time. It depends on the pain you are feeling and how it should be fixed.
A Chiropractor will work with a patient’s entire body but they focus primarily on the patient’s spine. This is because Chiropractors believe that the majority of a body’s illnesses and injuries can be treated via treating the spine. Here are some of the things you can expect when you visit a Chiropractor:
When you go in for your initial visit with the Chiropractor, your Chiropractor will take your full medical history. You will also be given a full physical exam with extra attention given to your spine and your joints. You might have to take some x-rays and your Chiropractor might do some extra tests to narrow down your diagnosis.
If your Chiropractor thinks that having Chiropractic treatment done is the best course of action for your particular injury or pain, the two of you will begin working on a long term treatment plan.
On your future visits to the Chiropractor, there are a few different treatments that your Chiropractor might try. Your Chiropractor might adjust your spine (some people call this “back cracking” because of the noise that is made by your joints and your spine as they are adjusted; the process is not actually painful). Your Chiropractor might also put you through some mobilization therapy”therapy that improves the functions of your joints.
In addition to adjustments, mobilization therapy and other types of treatment (massage, pressure electrical stimulation, etc), your Chiropractor will probably advise you to treat your injury at home. These treatments involve using heat and ice to help your muscles, getting lots of rest and a range of rehabilitation exercises that your Chiropractor will show you how to do.
Chiropractors have also been known to develop diet and exercise plans with their patients.
Some people say they feel tired after they visit a Chiropractor. This is perfectly understandable as a visit to the Chiropractor is not unlike going to the gym for a workout”only in this case it is you who is still and the “machine” (the Chiropractor) that does the moving for you.
There is no need to worry about an upcoming visit to the Chiropractor. Chiropractic care is rarely painful. It is meant to help a person heal and diminish the pain he or she might be feeling.
